BLOVICE
and Surrounding Areas
The town of Blovice is situated in a picturesque valley near the Uslava river. It was originally
the property of the nearby Cistercian Monastery. Numerous archaeological findings indicate that
this place has been settled since the Stone Ages. Elevated habitation, such as a variety of rock
formations in Bzi, Velky Kamen by Srby. Vlkov in Kamensko forest and Polanka still exist from
the late Stone Ages. The oldest written mention of Blovice was recorded in 1284: but the turning
point in its history occurred at the beginning of the l5th century. At that time. a large meeting of
people took place on Bzi, a nearby hill. This meeting was led by Vaclav Koranda senior.
Apparently, the Cistercian Monastery was burned down and heathen feudal lords became the
keepers of Blovice in 1420. The present St. Jan Evangelista Baroque Church was built during their
influence between 1760 and 1767. It was situated on the former location of a Gothic church.
In the 19th century, Hradiste castle, with its surrounding English park, came into existence where
there was once a fortified settlement. In 1873. the castle was rebuilt in a pseudo-Gothic style. A
group of beautiful Baroque sculptures surround St. Kriz (St. Cross), situated on the hill-top above
the Uslava river and the statue of St.Jan Nepomucky from 1707 belong among the most significant
sculptures in the town. It is also interesting to mention the National History Museum which was
established by Frantisek Rausar in 1913. He was the director of public and council schools in
Blovice. Today, the museum's collection consists of archaeological, ethnographical, applied-art,
literary, historical and art work. Products from the glass works in Nove Mitrovice, wooden toys
from Skasov and works of art made by local artists belong among the valuable district collections.
Blovice is also the birth place of renowned journalist and correspondent for the English newspaper
The Times, Adolf Opper de Blowitz, the artist Jaroslav Safarik -Safara and the academic sculptor
Vaclav Zalud. The dean and poet F.J.Vacek - Kamenicky, the teacher and poet V.M.Vejskrab
Belohrobský and the academic artist Josef Matejka also worked in Blovice. Visitors to
Blovice are able to see attractive historical buildings in the neighborhood. The ruins of the Gothic
Castle Vlctejn is one of them. The ruins are connected with many legends and tales from the time
of the Thirty Years' War and the Hussite period. In 1450, a peace treaty between Strakonice and
Podebrady (represented by Jiri of Podebrad) was signed here. The distinguished writer Krystof
Harant ofzdruzic stayed at the castle before the Thirty Years' War began. Numerous
newly repaired churches in Zdar, Zdemyslice, Zakava and Nezvestice are worth visiting, particularly the one in Zdar. It is surrounded by a cemetery and its interior is decorated with frescos illustrating St. Vaclav's (St. Wenceslas') life from the middle of the 14th century. It belongs
to an idyllic corner of the Blovice region. If we follow the wooden paths from Zdirec and Mecholupy, we come to the nature preserve, Chejlava, home to a variety of forest vegetation, with an area of 25.9 hectares.
